CJR’s Psycho-social Support Specialist, OM Chariya, counseling participants during their tour of Tuol Sleng. More Photos

During projects engaging survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime symptoms of distress and trauma often surface.  To address these issues, our Psycho-social Support Program supports participants by offering healing and coping strategies. The team, consisting of psycho-social experts YIM Sotheary and OM Chariya, and supported by DED psycho-social advisor KIESEL Stefan, complement CJR’s work.  Ms. YIM Sotheary and OM Chariya were instrumental in creating the handbook Understanding Trauma in Cambodia, funded by DED and now widely used as part of the curriculum in the country’s most prestigious universities.

In addition to counseling and support on site during CJR’s activities, the Psycho-Social Support Program also provides a helpline phone service.  This service provides participants with the opportunity to stay in touch with our psycho-social support staff for the full duration of our programs (which usually include several personal meetings).  The helpline phone service is also available for any past participants of the Center for Social Development’s programs and can be reached at
+855-17-304-054.

The Psycho-social Support Program has received very positive responses from CJR’s target groups.  CJR recognizes mental health and healing as integral to the success of all of our activities.

Download the Trauma Handbook CJR has been generously authorized by German Development Service (DED) to share this publication, to which they retain the sole copyright.  CJR gratefully thanks DED for providing our core funding, which enables us to maintain this website and distribute their trauma handbook.  The handbook was created in 2008 by current CJR staff then employed by the Center for Social Development, at that time also supported by DED.   DED’s contribution has enabled CJR to provide expert staff who give guidance to Khmer Rouge victims and others through psycho-social support programming.
